On going Xenophobia in SouthAfrica to say my heart is broken is an understatement. But we can’t all pretend to be surprised, this has been happening consistently for years without anyone, including their government and ours, doing anything about it. When people get away with wrong doings without any repercussions, they are emboldened to do it over and over again.
The main issue I see with us Africans is our lack of knowledge of our own collective history and struggle as a race and as a people. Some of the ‘best’ works I have read on ‘African History’ were stories told by outsiders who aren’t even Africans. Not too far in the historic past was the South African Apartheid, where NIGERIA and a host of other African countries played a major role in supporting the South African struggle.
When South Africans refer to ‘foreigners’ today, they specifically mean `NIGERIANS, Zambians, Zimbabweans and a host of other AFRICANS they do not like, who live in SA but are not South Africans’… Now south Africa has a very racially diverse population; there are clumps of different races scattered around the country, there are very visible and dominant Indian, Pakistani, white etc. communities who go about their daily business (as they rightly should anyways), while a Nigerian is being burnt in the streets because he is a ‘FOREIGNER’….
This is where you want to pause and consider that there is something fundamentally wrong with Africans as a people… And this maltreatment of other Africans doesn’t just happen in South Africa, there is Ghana, and even the modern day Libyan slave trade is an offshoot of this….
Now let’s talk about repercussions… It takes the Nigerian foreign affairs ministry about 48 hours to issue a statement about this, and not even a travel advisory for people to desist from travelling to SA at the moment; then after a few days of social media outrage, the SA government will soon issue a politically correct statement in form of ‘apology’ to all affected, no one will be charged to court or prosecuted; then the SA xenophobic attackers after a few months of everyone acting like nothing ever happened, rise and repeat….I am tired ?
